What's Left 2015-11-22 Volume 36

Terror, totalitarianism and weaponization of outer space are the themes in What's Left this week. The aftermath of shock and terror has long been used by the state to push regressive policies that further concentrate power and wealth. One of the most effective means by which to counter such concentrations of power is through broad private and public dissemination of knowledge. It should be no surprise then, that governments (and corporations) throughout history have sought to intercept and monitor any information that could pose a challenge to their totalitarianism.

What's Left 2015-11-15 Volume 35

Socialist solidarity and struggle around the world is based on the understanding that all people deserve liberty, justice, and peace. We continue to fail in this mission so long as there is global war and strife taking the lives of innocent victims. The most recent attacks on the peoples of France and Lebanon is another indication that our local struggles for a better world cannot ignore the plight of people from all corners of the planet.

What's Left 2015-11-01 Volume 32

This past week saw province-wide rotating strikes by Québec's public sector workers. The strikes are part of the popular Common Front movement against the austerity program being rolled out by the provincial Liberals. The government's cut-backs threaten the availability and quality of public services for many of the province's most vulnerable citizens. In total, more than 70,000 teachers,professional caregivers, technicians, support and administrative staff,labourers, and other civil servants walked out.

What's Left 2015-10-25 Volume 31

As campaign offices are vacated across the country, Canadians of all stripes are left reflecting on the new reality of a Liberal majority government. There is a lot to be said about the federal election. However, most of what has been published so far is predictable and fairly shallow in its analysis. Since What's Left is not keen on being uninteresting, the coming weeks and months will be spent digging deeper to present a constructive analysis to point out the things that went wrong for the left and, more importantly, map a rational path forward for organizers.

In this week's edition, part two of our back-to-school special on privatization 'Losing control of the university: Corporatization'. Also, a call for a thorough reflection when reforming labour law; misogyny surfaces as students return to campuses countrywide; open source program takes on the most proprietary system known; and we ask if a leadership change bring change in broader values.

What's Left 2015-09-20 Volume 28

Once a university is run as a private corporation, the other processes of privatisation are easier to implement. The resulting silos compartmentalise research, teaching and knowledge transfer from the university's broader social missions. This undermines the delicate ecosystem that allows for knowledge generation. This is why the struggle to sustain and rebuild a functional university system must always include the struggle against corporate restructuring.
