White Helmets evacuated from Syria by Israel | The Guardian

by Faiz Ahmed — last modified Jul 22, 2018 09:39 PM
"The Israelis had initially put the numbers evacuated at 800, but later the figure was revised downwards by James Le Mesurier, a former MI5 officer who is considered to have founded the group in Turkey in 2013. ... The group receives funding from a number of governments, including Britain, Germany and the US ... State media said on Sunday the fact that Israel, with which Syria is formally at war, had facilitated the evacuation was evidence of the group’s collaboration with an enemy power."

Israel’s parliament backs controversial nation state bill | The Financial Times

by Faiz Ahmed — last modified Jul 19, 2018 07:54 AM
"The Israeli parliament has backed controversial legislation that declares Jews alone have the right to national self-determination in Israel, downgrades Arabic from its status as an official language and encourages the building of Jewish settlements. ... The law, while largely symbolic, is especially controversial because it does not include a clause that guarantees equal protections for non-Jews in Israel. Since Israel does not have a constitution, legal opinions of equal rights are drawn from an interpretation of a basic law regarding human dignity and liberty."

Israeli parliament votes to ban state and army critics from schools | The Guardian

by Faiz Ahmed — last modified Jul 17, 2018 02:29 PM
"The bill is one of two debated this week in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, that have been criticised as draconian and anti-democratic. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, had hoped to pass another draft law that caused an uproar due to a line in the text that appeared to legalise racially segregated communities, which could allow for Jewish-only towns. It has since been reported that the Nation-State bill, which has not passed but would hold constitution-like status and has been compared to apartheid, has been amended to read that the state will instead “encourage and promote” Jewish settlements."

"Rebels there have reportedly agreed to surrender in return for an amnesty or safe passage to the rebel-held north. ... Dozens of rebel-held towns and villages agreed localised truces before the main rebel factions opened negotiations with Russian mediators on a wider deal. ... Meanwhile, the Israeli military attacked three Syrian army posts near the Golan frontier on Thursday"

Of Trade and Tariffs

by JBB — last modified Jul 11, 2018 02:52 PM
by Tom Crofton | CounterPunch | Real prosperity for all would include more leisure time instead of a second or third job. Renewable materials tastefully made into durable goods don’t have to be thing of the past. Locally grown food offers great opportunities for meaningful work, better health, and a reduced carbon footprint. Manufacturing wastes need to become raw materials for other products. Waste energy needs to be reused in other forms. None of these ideas are new or difficult. Implementing them as a holistic plan cuts against the global/top down/short term profit model that rules the world.

Jennifer Hollett running for city council | Toronto Star

by Roxanne Dubois — last modified Jul 10, 2018 11:27 AM
Hollett will sign up to run for the newly-redrawn Ward 21 on Tuesday. The ward covers the waterfront from Yonge St. to the Don Valley Parkway and is largely bordered to the north by Shuter St., encompassing neighbourhoods such as Moss Park, St. Lawrence and Corktown. “People are being squeezed out of Toronto, especially downtown, and I can’t imagine a vibrant downtown without young people, newcomers, working class people, families, artists, entrepreneurs and that is the tension right now,” Hollett said in an interview Monday. “There’s an opportunity as our community is growing . . . to get it right, to make sure we’re not just building buildings but building communities.”
