The government of Venezuela would do well to nationalize the distribution arm of the country’s largest private-sector food producer, Empresas Polar. The company has been at odds with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela since 2008 when the government began a crackdown on food production companies found to be hoarding products as a way to inflate food prices. Government scrutiny has had the effect of publicizing the company’s political stances and the population has become quite aware of what the terms of the dispute are. That Venezuelans have been able to withstand food shortages for as many years as they have is testament to their resolve in maintaining a government that is responsive to their interests.
