Doug Ford’s budgetary bait-and-switch reveals blind spot for Ontario workers | Martin Regg Cohn

Out of 2.9 million Ontarians eligible for a LIFT credit (earning less than $38,500 a year), only 1 million will get any benefit. Of those, a mere 19,000 Ontarians will get the maximum $850 credit that Ford dangled. Another 1.9 million minimum wage workers will get nothing — no $15 minimum wage increase, and no tax credit. That’s because “very few eligible LIFT recipients pay enough Ontario personal income tax to qualify” for the promised credit, according to the legislature’s non-partisan Financial Accountability Office.
